In the wake of India's swift defeat in the first Test against South Africa, Rohit Sharma finds himself at the center of critique. The Indian skipper's performance, both as a batsman and captain, faced scrutiny after the team's loss within three days in Centurion. Sharma's batting contributions of 5 and 0 in the Test, both times falling prey to Kagiso Rabada, raised concerns. Additionally, his captaincy received flak as India conceded 408 runs on a pitch favoring bowlers.

Former Indian cricketer Subramaniam Badrinath didn't mince words, openly questioning Sharma's position in the team and his efficacy as an opener on the international stage. Badrinath highlighted Virat Kohli's absence in the captaincy role, emphasizing Kohli's superior record and asserting him as a more accomplished Test player compared to Sharma. He expressed bewilderment at Sharma's continued presence and asserted that the latter hasn't yet established himself as an opener outside India.

Badrinath echoed the sentiment of many, wondering why Virat Kohli wasn't leading the Test team. Kohli's impressive track record as a Test captain was cited, emphasizing his 52-average with over 5000 runs, accompanied by 40 wins in 68 matches. Highlighting Kohli's pivotal role in significant victories, Badrinath positioned him as a formidable leader in the longest format of the game.

This critique adds fuel to the ongoing debate surrounding India's Test captaincy, with advocates for Kohli's reinstatement based on his proven leadership and batting prowess. Sharma's efficacy as an opener beyond Indian shores remains a subject of contention, potentially impacting his continued role in the team. The question persists: should Kohli reclaim the reins in Test cricket? The cricketing fraternity awaits a resolution to this polarizing debate.
