The second peace summit on Ukraine was a key focus during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in New York on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly. However, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri emphasized that much remains to be done before the proposed summit can take place.

This meeting marked the third time Modi and Zelensky have met in just over three months. During the talks, Modi reiterated India's commitment to a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict, emphasizing the need for diplomacy and dialogue. Zelensky thanked India for its support of Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and the two leaders discussed Ukraine’s peace formula and preparations for the second peace summit.

Despite the positive discussions, Misri stated that the situation is not yet ripe for the summit, noting that several key issues still require resolution. He added that India remains open to facilitating a peaceful resolution of the conflict, and Modi’s engagement with both Zelensky and Russian President Vladimir Putin reflects India's role in seeking a diplomatic solution.

Zelensky also acknowledged India's potential role as a mediator, particularly if it signs on to the communiqué adopted at the first peace summit in Switzerland. Meanwhile, discussions continue on enhancing bilateral cooperation in various fields, including post-war reconstruction, trade, defense, and education.

India, concerned by the human and economic toll of the war, is pushing for a ceasefire and a lasting resolution, but much groundwork remains before the next steps in the peace process can be formalized.
