The 2017 murder case of Irish backpacker Danielle McLaughlin in Goa nears its final verdict after eight years. Accused Vikat Bhagat faces charges of rape and murder. Her family hopes for justice as the court is set to announce its decision on February 13.

The long-awaited verdict in the brutal 2017 murder and rape case of Irish backpacker Danielle McLaughlin is expected next week, bringing her family’s eight-year quest for justice closer to an end.
McLaughlin, a 28-year-old from Donegal, Ireland, was found dead near Palolem Beach in Goa on March 14, 2017. Her body bore severe injuries, and a post-mortem confirmed sexual assault and brain haemorrhage as the cause of death. The accused, Vikat Bhagat, a local with a history of criminal activities, was arrested and charged with murder, rape, and destruction of evidence.
The trial, which began in August 2017 in a fast-track court, has been prolonged due to legal delays and the Covid-19 pandemic. Despite Bhagat’s repeated attempts to secure bail, citing prolonged incarceration, the court rejected his pleas, noting his misconduct in prison, including threats to witnesses and involvement in smuggling and gang activities.
McLaughlin’s mother, Andrea Brannigan, expressed anxiety and hope ahead of the verdict. “I just want justice for Danielle. She was a kind and generous soul who deeply loved her family,” she said from Ireland.
Advocate Vikram Varma, representing McLaughlin’s family, remains optimistic. “The prosecution has presented a strong case, and we expect a fair judgment,” he stated.

The case is one of Goa’s most high-profile crimes involving foreign tourists, alongside the 2008 murder of British teenager Scarlett Keeling and the unresolved death of Finnish tourist Felix Dahl in 2015. The final verdict is set to be announced on February 13.
