The Union Finance Ministry has warned employees against using AI tools like ChatGPT and DeepSeek for official use, citing security risks to government data. This advisory comes before OpenAI CEO Sam Altman's visit to India, joining global concerns over AI technology's potential impact on privacy.

The Union Finance Ministry has issued a directive urging its employees to refrain from using AI tools, including ChatGPT and DeepSeek, for official purposes, citing potential risks to the confidentiality of government documents. The advisory, dated January 29, highlights concerns over data security. The move comes just before OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman's visit to India, where he is scheduled to meet IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw.
The ministry's notice emphasizes that AI applications like ChatGPT and DeepSeek pose security threats, with sensitive government data potentially being compromised. According to sources within the ministry, the advisory was shared internally this week, and the risks were identified with regard to the usage of office computers and devices.
The warning aligns with similar actions taken globally, as several countries have restricted the use of DeepSeek, particularly due to concerns over its Chinese origins. Taiwan, for instance, has prohibited its government agencies from using DeepSeek due to national security fears. The United States and the United Kingdom have also cautioned their citizens and officials about using such AI tools for confidential matters.
