Four American university tutors are attacked in a public park in Jilin province in northern China on Monday night by an unknown man using a knife.

One of the instructors teaching at a private college in Iowa – Cornell College – and her students were walking through Beishan Park when they were attacked by a knife-wielding man, as reported by Iowa Representative Adam Zabner. His brother David was one of those involved in the incident and was stabbed on the arm.

“He has not yet been released this morning but he’s okay,” Zabner said in an interview with CBS News. David Zabner is a doctoral student at Tufts University and this was the second visit of the professor from Cornell College, USA to China.

The college informed that the four were visiting China as a group, in order to attend a university there in an official capacity as part of a partnership between the two institutions. They were with one of the Beihua University employee, who was with them at the time the attack was launched.

It seems there are at least three bleeding victims on the images that are circulating on the net, after the event. However, the stabbing is now censored on Chinese social media as related terms have been searched and cannot be viewed.

The reports regarding stabbing incident in Jilin were confirmed by a U. S. State Department spokesperson though he did not give more information about this incident. The Chinese authorities seem to have remained tight-lipped over the attack at the time of writing this piece.

The stabbing has occurred at the time of increased tensions between the United States and China, however, the two countries have attempted to step up cooperation in the spheres of academic and cultural exchange in the recent past. Chinese President Xi Jinping recently launched what is known as the ‘young American ambassador program’ aimed at inviting 50,000 young Americans to China within five years.

Cornell College revealed that the four injured were engaged in an educational program partnership with a Chinese university. Some unknown reason of the attack still remains a mystery as the case continues to be investigated.
