Four people have died and 16 have been injured in the collapse of the two-storied building where a beach restaurant was situated on Thursday evening in Palma de Majorca, the capital of the Spanish island of Majorca, as per the local medics.

The incident occurred around 8:At 30 p.  m.  local time in the Medusa Beach Club located at Cartago Street, Palma. The floor of the establishment collapsed and everyone fell through to the lower level of the store where more patrons and employees could be found.

Public safety departments were forced and needed to go on with the search and rescue operation to remove any living person that might be trapped under the rubble. Police reported that most of the people targeted were aliens and visitors to this beautiful Mediterranean island.

“There are at least several people trapped under the debris,” endorsed Palma Fire Chief Eder García. He said that the people were still being retrieved from the affected area at midnight and they were also cordoning the area.

The cause of the collapse is not yet known although police attributed the disaster to the fact that too much weight may have been placed on a balcony. The interviewees stated that they heard a sound like a loud bang before they saw the building collapse.

Both Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and the regional president of the Balearic Islands, Marga Prohens, offered their condolences over the catastrophe. According to Sánchez, the government is ready to participate in any support as needed.

Apart from being one of the most preferred tourism destinations in Spain, Majorca receives over 17 million visitors annually. This building was situated in an area famous for tourism, near the seaside and recreation places where there are many clubs and bars.
