Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrives in Italy for the G7 Summit 2024, aiming to address global challenges and foster cooperation. The Russia-Ukraine conflict is expected to dominate discussions among world leaders.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi reached the Apulia region of southern Italy on Tuesday for the G7 meeting. During his first trip abroad after starting his third consecutive term as head of the government of India, Mr. Modi said that he wanted to press leaders of other countries on the issues concerning the world and establish cooperation with them.
The Prime Minister is set to speak at a plenary session by the name ‘Artificial Intelligence, Energy, Africa-Mediterranean’ presided over by the Italian PM, Georgia Meloni and accompanied by Pope Francis. He will also be meeting the Pope in a one on one conversation and is also slated to attend several other meetings with other heads of state during the summit.
During his departure statement, Mr. Modi stressed further strengthening of India-Italy bilateral ties and enhancing cooperation in the Indo-Pacific and Mediterranean arenas. He also underlined that there would be more coherence between the results of the G20 Summit under India’s presidency last year and the G7 Summit.
The fighting in Russia and Ukraine will be the focus of the summit, with Zelenskiy due to attend talks with EU leaders on Tuesday. Despite India coming out clearly on the ‘dialogue and diplomacy’ approach, the UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak is among the leaders calling for more decisive actions to support Ukraine.

Besides G7 countries, Italy has invited presidents and prime ministers of 11 developing countries: five from Africa, four from South America, and two from the Indo-Pacific region to the summit. Selecting southern Italy as the place for this meeting is viewed as an attempt to let the Global South know that the G7 wants to continue the dialogue under the Italian leadership.
