Section 144 has been enforced in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh, following the assassination of a close associate of Mukhtar Ansari, a former gangster turned politician, inside a courtroom in Lucknow. The victim, identified as Sanjeev Maheshwari, also known as Jeeva, was fatally shot while being escorted for a hearing in a criminal case.

According to the police, the assailant fired at Jeeva from behind as he entered the court premises.

In response to this incident, the authorities have implemented Section 144 in Kanpur as a preventive measure to maintain law and order. The primary objective is to safeguard both public and private properties, while also curbing the dissemination of false information within the region.

Special attention has been given to monitoring social media platforms for any provocative posts and halting the circulation of misleading content.

To ensure strict compliance with these instructions, the Kanpur Police Commissionerate has mandated that all cyber cafe operators in the jurisdiction refuse access to unidentified individuals unless they provide valid proof of identity. This measure aims to regulate and control the usage of cybercafes, preventing unauthorized individuals from misusing these facilities.

Furthermore, the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, and Assistant Commissioner of Police have been directed to affix notices informing the public about the instructions and their obligations to adhere to them.

Sanjeev Jeeva was implicated in the murder of BJP leader Bramha Dutt Dwivedi in February 1997, resulting in a life imprisonment sentence.

The imposition of Section 144 in Kanpur demonstrates the authorities' commitment to maintaining peace and order in the aftermath of this shocking incident. By taking proactive steps, such as monitoring social media and restricting access to cybercafes, the authorities aim to prevent the spread of misinformation and any potential escalation of tensions.

These measures seek to ensure the safety of the public, protect private properties, and bring those responsible for the crimes to justice.
