According to G20
Chief Coordinator Harshvardhan Shringla, the upcoming three-day G20 tourism
working group meeting in Srinagar will have more foreign delegates than the
previous two meetings.
The tourism
working group meeting in Srinagar has attracted the highest number of foreign
delegations compared to previous meetings. It includes representatives from G20
countries and international organizations, with Singapore having the largest
presence among the participating member countries.
Senior diplomats
from Bangladesh and South Korea, including High Commissioner Mustafizur Rahman
and Ambassador Chang Jae-bok, are expected to attend meetings in Srinagar over
the next three days.
The event holds
significance as it is the first international gathering in Jammu and Kashmir
since it became a Union Territory in 2019. The choice of Srinagar as the venue
underscores its suitability for hosting a working group on tourism in India.
Previously, the
G20 tourism working group meetings were held in Gujarat and West Bengal.
Shringla
emphasized that the meeting's primary goals are to showcase India's diverse
cultural heritage and highlight its tourism potential. It aims to incorporate
sustainable, eco-friendly, and adventure tourism aspects specific to Jammu and
Kashmir.
The meeting also
seeks to boost economic growth, safeguard cultural heritage, and foster
sustainable development in the region. The J&K Tourism Secretary mentioned
the promotion of 300 new tourist destinations across various routes to cater to
the growing tourism industry in Jammu and Kashmir.
Srinagar is
experiencing an unprecedented level of security measures for the upcoming G20
meeting. These measures include enhanced CCTV surveillance, anti-drone systems,
and the deployment of elite forces like the NSG and Marine Commandos.
Restrictions on
civilian movement are also in place to ensure security.
Gulmarg has been
excluded from the itinerary due to security and logistical concerns, and
security has been strengthened across the entire Valley to counter any
potential disruptions by militants.
A multi-tier
security system has been implemented, with increased coordination between
different security and intelligence agencies to thwart any militant activities.
For the first
time, the NSG and Marine Commandos have been deployed to ensure the security of
the Sher-e-Kashmir International Convention Centre (SKICC) and its vicinity.
Additional
surveillance cameras have been installed to closely monitor the area, and
real-time monitoring of the footage is underway.
To facilitate the
meeting, civilian movement on the main road leading to SKICC has been
restricted, and schools in Srinagar will be closed from Monday to Wednesday.
As a precaution,
security agencies have advised members of the minority community and external
workers to remain indoors due to concerns of potential attacks by militants.
The Lieutenant-Governor of J&K sees the G20 meeting as a chance for locals
to demonstrate their culture, heritage, tourism, and hospitality.
The commencement
of the third tourism working group meeting of the G20 on May 22 presents a
momentous occasion for the 13 million inhabitants of Jammu and Kashmir. It
offers them a unique platform to exhibit their invaluable culture, rich
heritage, flourishing tourism sector, and welcoming hospitality.
The individual
appealed to all the citizens to actively participate in this remarkable event
and contribute towards its triumphant execution.
