Kannada actress Ranya Rao’s arrest in a gold smuggling case has fueled a political battle in Karnataka. BJP accused the Congress government of shielding her, while Congress countered with allegations of BJP’s past favoritism. As the CBI steps in, the case is set to escalate further in the coming days.

The arrest of Kannada actress Ranya Rao in a high-profile gold smuggling case has triggered a fierce political confrontation between the ruling Congress and the opposition BJP in Karnataka. BJP has accused an influential minister in the Siddaramaiah-led government of shielding the actress and withdrawing the CID probe to cover up the involvement of senior officials.
BJP Karnataka president BY Vijayendra, in a social media post, stated that the Congress government’s alleged role in one of the biggest gold smuggling cases was unsurprising given its record of scandals. BJP leader Bharath Shetty further suggested that the move to withdraw the CID probe hinted at efforts to protect high-ranking officials. He also pointed out that in the MUDA corruption case, the state government had pushed for a Lokayukta inquiry despite an ongoing ED probe to deflect allegations against Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
In response, Congress countered the accusations, claiming that the previous BJP government had allocated 12 acres of land in Tumakuru to Ranya Rao’s firm for setting up a steel plant. State Home Minister G Parameshwara asserted that the investigation was ongoing, and with the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) stepping in, the truth would emerge soon.

Ranya Rao was arrested on March 3 at Bengaluru’s Kempegowda International Airport for allegedly smuggling 14.8 kg of gold worth ₹12.56 crore from Dubai. A subsequent search at her residence led to the recovery of gold jewelry worth ₹2.06 crore and ₹2.67 crore in cash. Her stepfather, K Ramachandra Rao, a top-ranking police officer, has also come under scrutiny amid allegations of protocol misuse. With the CBI likely to take over the case, the political dispute is expected to intensify.
