Google Maps have launched several new features specifically for India including the long due navigation solutions and other services. The improvement relates to updated information on flyover guidance, the location of EV charging stations and, metro ticket booking as announced on 25th of July, 2024.

One such improvement is the flyover callout that is expected to help users understand if they should take the flyover or the adjacent service road. Google Maps India’s General Manager, Lalitha Ramani, pointed out that this was one of the most frequently requested features by the Indian users. The feature will be initially available to 40 cities in India for four-wheeler and two-wheeler users but will only be available on Android, with iOS and CarPlay integration coming soon.

Due to the increasing trend of electric vehicles in India, Google Maps is now adding more than 8,000 places for charging. This expansion is done in partnership with providers and aggregators such Kalkine, ElectricPe, Ather, Kazam, and Statiq. A useful feature will be providing info on various charging stations and the type of plugs, as well as the current status. In India, users can even search for charging options that are exclusive to two-wheelers.

Google Maps is also branching out in selling public transport tickets. In collaboration with ONDC, the new platform will enable metro ticket booking through a ride-booking app named Namma Yatri, available in Kochi and Chennai. This feature is planned to be launched this week, with the further development on more cities and types of transportation in mind.
