Chennai, along with surrounding districts, anticipates Cyclone Michaung, prompting the closure of schools, colleges, and government offices on December 5. The cyclonic storm, intensifying over the West Bay of Bengal, has led authorities to issue directives for safety. With forecasts of heavy rainfall and strong winds, the closure aims to ensure safety while essential services and disaster relief efforts remain operational.

Amidst the looming threat of Cyclone Michaung, Chennai and its adjacent districts find themselves preparing for precautionary measures. Government mandates have directed the closure of educational institutions and government offices on December 5, citing the imminent danger posed by the approaching cyclonic storm.

The decision follows the intensification of a deep depression over the West Bay of Bengal, now transformed into Cyclone Michaung. Located at approximately 90 km east-northeast of Chennai as of 8:30 AM on December 4, 2023, the storm is predicted to move in a north and northwest direction. Meteorological projections indicate its further intensification before reaching the west-central Bay of Bengal, near South Andhra Pradesh and the adjoining North Tamil Nadu by December 5 forenoon.

Anticipating heavy to very heavy rainfall and strong winds in Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu Districts, authorities have taken the precaution of closing educational institutes and government offices. This proactive step aims to safeguard citizens from potential risks associated with the cyclonic storm.

However, essential services crucial for public safety, including police, fire services, local bodies, medical facilities, power supply, transportation, and disaster relief operations, will continue to function uninterrupted. These services, along with establishments involved in emergency response and relief activities, remain operational to ensure public welfare and address any unforeseen emergencies during the cyclone.

This strategic closure aligns with the government's prioritization of public safety and disaster preparedness, urging citizens to adhere to safety guidelines while authorities closely monitor the evolving situation.
