Government Received Proposals for New Cities:-
The Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs informed Rajya Sabha on Monday that it has received 26 proposals from 21 states to build new cities in response to the growing need for urban development in the country. The proposals are currently under evaluation.
"A state can have only one new city through this fund. Thus, a maximum of nine new cities in nine states can be selected. Considering the small urban population in northeast and hill states, Rs 1,000 crore for two new cities (Rs 500 crore each) for two different states has been proposed," the ministry said.
The government plans to choose a total of nine cities, that is one state will be able to develop one city. Each selected city will receive a grant of Rs 1,000 crore from the government. The 15th Finance Commission has assigned Rs 8,000 crore for a challenge fund based on performance to support the development of the new cities, which will be selected through a competitive process.
The cities that are considered for the urban expansion includes Ayodhya (UP), Jagiroad (Assam), New MOPA Ayush City, Pernem (Goa), GIFT city expansion (Gujarat), Pakyong (Sikkim), Thirumazhisai (Tamil Nadu), Bantala Greenfield City, Karma Diganta (West Bengal), Jabalpur Extension (MP), Virul (Maharashtra), Aerocity (Kerala), among others.
This is going to be a great step in order to develop the country's infrastructure as well as it opens the door for new opportunities for the locals.
