Gujarat Courts Sentence Seven Rapists to Life Imprisonment in a Single Day

In a landmark move, Gujarat courts sentenced seven rapists to life imprisonment in a single day under the POCSO Act. Home Minister Harsh Sanghvi commended the swift police action and legal proceedings. Gujarat has delivered 947 POCSO verdicts in three years, ensuring justice for victims and stricter crime deterrence.

In a rare and significant move, courts in Gujarat’s Amreli, Vadodara, and Rajkot districts sentenced seven rapists to life imprisonment on February 25, 2025, in cases registered under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act.

Minister of State for Home Affairs, Harsh Sanghvi, praised the swift and strict action taken against the perpetrators, emphasizing that the Gujarat government remains committed to eliminating crimes against women and children. He credited the police for gathering solid evidence, ensuring a strong prosecution, and working with forensic experts to secure these convictions.

In Amreli, chargesheets in two cases were filed within 17 days, while in another case, the accused was arrested the same day. In Rajkot, one chargesheet was filed within 40 days, while in the Patanvav case, police made an arrest on the day of the crime, and in Bhayavadar, the chargesheet was submitted within seven days.

Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel has directed authorities to take stringent action to curb crimes of sexual violence. Under his leadership, Gujarat courts have delivered 947 verdicts in POCSO cases over the past three years, sentencing 574 individuals to life imprisonment and 11 to death.
