Ahmedabad, July 1, 2023: The Gujarat High Court has turned down social activist Teesta Setalvad's bail plea in 2002 riot case and ordered her immediate surrender.

Setalvad is facing charges of fabricating evidence related to the 2002 Gujarat riots.

The verdict was delivered by a Single bench of Justice Nirzar S Desai, who also dismissed Setalvad's lawyer's request for an interim stay on the order, preventing her from moving to the Supreme Court.

Senior advocate Mihir Thakore had urged the court to stay the operation of the verdict for 30 days, but the plea was denied by Justice Desai.

The 2002 Gujarat riots case took a new turn when Setalvad, a prominent social activist, was arrested in June 2022. The arrest was made following an FIR filed by the Ahmedabad Detection of Crime Branch (DCB), which accused her of being involved in a conspiracy to falsely implicate innocent individuals in connection with the tragic events of 2002.

It is worth noting that Setalvad had been protected from arrest earlier due to an interim bail granted by the Supreme Court in September 2022. However, the recent decision by the Gujarat High Court has now invalidated that protection, requiring her immediate surrender to face the charges against her.

The 2002 Gujarat riots were a dark chapter in the history of the state, leading to widespread loss of life and property.

The case involving Setalvad has attracted significant attention and legal scrutiny over the years, making it a matter of public interest.

Teesta Setalvad's legal team is likely to challenge the High Court's decision in the Supreme Court to seek relief. As the case unfolds, the nation watches closely, hoping for justice to be served, and the truth to prevail in the wake of one of the most painful episodes in India's recent history.
