Titans Crush Lucknow Super Giants by 56 Runs at Modi Stadium to Solidify Top
Spot
Gujarat Titans strengthen their position at
the top of the table with a dominant performance, beating Lucknow Super Giants
by a whopping 56 runs at Ahmedabad's Narendra Modi Stadium on Sunday, May 7th.
The Titans put on a commanding display with the bat, followed by a disciplined
bowling performance in the second half of the game, restricting LSG to just
171/7.
Wriddhiman
Saha and Shubman Gill's blitzkrieg propel Gujarat Titans to victory
The partnership of Wriddhiman Saha and
Shubman Gill set the stage for the Titans to post a mammoth total of 227/2,
with Saha scoring 81 off just 43 balls and Gill remaining unbeaten on 94 off
51. Although Kyle Mayers and Quinton de Kock fought hard with their batting,
LSG struggled to keep up with the required run rate, and Mohit Sharma's
excellent 4-29 bowling performance sealed the win for Gujarat Titans.
Saha
and Gill lead the charge as Gujarat Titans score the season's highest powerplay
total
Mohsin Khan's return to the IPL after an
injury layoff was far from impressive as he struggled to find his rhythm
against a rampaging Wriddhiman Saha. Saha, on the other hand, capitalized on
Mohsin's rustiness to help Gujarat Titans achieve a blazing start. With
effortless ease, Saha dispatched the short deliveries and hammered drives over
the fence to reach a fifty in just 20 deliveries, the fastest for any Titans
player this season. Mohsin was taken for 34 runs in his two overs in the
powerplay, while Avesh Khan, Krunal Pandya, and Yash Thakur also failed to
contain the GT openers, who blasted six sixes and six fours in the first six
overs. While Shubman Gill was content playing second fiddle, he too hit a
couple of sixes as the Titans raced to 78/0 in the powerplay, the highest score
for any team this season.
Hardik
Pandya joins Gill's blitzkrieg as Gujarat Titans soar past 170-run mark
The Lucknow Super Giants were left reeling
as the Gujarat Titans' openers went on a rampage. Ravi Bishnoi's quiet over of
just four runs and Krunal Pandya's six-run over were the only moments of
respite for LSG amidst a flurry of boundaries and sixes. Wriddhiman Saha,
taking full advantage of the short-pitched deliveries, blazed his way to three
fours off Kyle Mayers in the eighth over. Meanwhile, Shubman Gill showed no
mercy, hitting two sixes off Bishnoi to reach his half-century off just 29
deliveries. The opening partnership broke when Avesh Khan dismissed Saha, but
Gill continued to unleash his assault on LSG's bowlers. Along with Hardik
Pandya, Gill smashed the ball around the ground with ease and helped the Titans
surge past the 170-run mark before the completion of the 15th over.
Gujarat
Titans unleash a run feast against hapless Lucknow Super Giants
After a tough start for LSG with the ball,
things didn't get any easier for them as the innings progressed. Despite a
brief respite in the middle overs, LSG continued to leak runs at the death,
conceding at a rate of 10.2 an over in the last five overs. Hardik Pandya was
dismissed by Mohsin Khan, who went for 42 in his three overs, but David Miller
and Shubman Gill ensured that the boundaries kept coming. Gill, who had hit
seven sixes by this point, narrowly missed out on his maiden IPL century as Miller
finished the innings off with a boundary and a single. With Miller's late
flurry, GT posted its highest total in the IPL.
LSG's
Mayers and De Kock give Titans a taste of their own medicine in the powerplay
LSG started their chase of the mammoth total in a blazing manner as Mayers smashed three fours off Hardik's over. De Kock, who was making his first appearance for LSG this season, joined the party with two consecutive boundaries off Shami. Mayers continued his onslaught as he struck a six and a boundary to amass 19 runs off the third over. De Kock also showed his class with two more fours off Hardik, while Mayers was dropped by Rashid Khan at the point. The pair completed their fifty partnership in just four overs with 12 fours and two sixes. Rashid and Noor Ahmad also failed to stop the onslaught as LSG raced to 72/0 after the powerplay.
Noor
Ahmad and Mohit Sharma tighten the screws as LSG struggles to keep up with GT
LSG's strong start was put to a halt as
GT's bowlers tightened their grip on the game. Mayers survived an lbw shout
from Rashid and a review from GT, with the latter showing an inside edge saving
him. A brilliant effort from Rashid ended Mayers' innings on 48, giving Mohit
Sharma his first wicket. Despite de Kock hitting a six off Hardik, GT's bowlers
Mohit and Rashid tightened the screws and put the pressure back on LSG.
Although de Kock reached a half-century in 31 balls, Hooda struggled to get
going and was dismissed by a full toss from Shami. Noor Ahmad kept it tight and
the boundaries dried up for LSG, who went 26 balls without hitting a four or
six. De Kock finally hit a six off Mohit, but the bowler retaliated with the
wicket of Stoinis, leaving LSG needing an improbable 98 runs in the last five
overs.
LSG's
batting crumbles under pressure as Gujarat Titans secure a commanding victory
Despite a strong start, LSG's batting
performance gradually deteriorated, with wickets falling at crucial times.
After de Kock's dismissal, Pooran and Impact sub-Ayush Badoni tried to keep the
chase alive with some big hits, but it wasn't enough as they fell short by a
huge margin. Rashid and Noor played a crucial role in restricting LSG's
scoring, with Rashid dismissing de Kock and Noor sending Pooran back to the
pavilion. Mohit also played his part with two important wickets. Alzarri Joseph
wrapped things up nicely in the final over, ensuring a comprehensive victory
for GT. LSG's disappointing performance meant that their net run rate took a
hit, which could come back to haunt them later in the tournament.
