Yahya Sinwar, alleged mastermind of the October 7 attacks in Israel, has been appointed as the new leader of Hamas following Ismail Haniyeh's death. Sinwar, 61, tops Israel's most-wanted list and is blacklisted by the U.S. as an international terrorist. His appointment may escalate tensions in the Middle East.

In a significant development, Hamas has appointed Yahya Sinwar as its new leader, following the death of Ismail Haniyeh last week. Sinwar, 61, is now at the helm of the Gaza-based Islamist group's political bureau, making him the highest-ranking official in the organization.

The change in leadership comes after Haniyeh was reportedly killed along with his bodyguard in Tehran, Iran's capital, in what Hamas claims was an Israeli operation. The group has vowed to avenge Haniyeh's death, potentially escalating tensions in the already volatile Middle East.

Sinwar, born in 1962 in Khan Yunis, Palestine, is a controversial figure who tops Israel's "most-wanted" list. Israeli security agencies believe he masterminded the October 7, 2023 attacks on Israel, which triggered the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The United States has also blacklisted him as an "international terrorist."

Known for his extremist views within Hamas, Sinwar founded Majd, the group's internal security unit, in the late 1980s. He has spent considerable time in Israeli prisons but was released in 2011 as part of a prisoner exchange for Israeli soldier Gilad Shalit.

Before his appointment as Hamas' overall leader, Sinwar headed the group's operations in Gaza. However, he has not been seen in public since the October 7 attacks. In June, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken claimed Sinwar was hiding "10 storeys underground" in Gaza.

As Hamas transitions to new leadership under Sinwar, the international community watches closely, anticipating potential shifts in the group's strategies and the broader implications for peace efforts in the region.
