The eagerly
anticipated schedule for the upcoming World Cup 2023 has been revealed by the
International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Board of Control for Cricket in
India (BCCI).
With just 100
days to go until the tournament commences, cricket enthusiasts have been
eagerly planning their schedules. Surprisingly, Mohali, a city that played a
significant role in the 2011 World Cup, has been overlooked this time.
In the previous
edition, the esteemed IS Bindra Stadium in Mohali proudly hosted three matches,
including the epic semi-final between arch-rivals India and Pakistan. However,
this time, it seems that fate has dealt a different hand to Mohali. Punjab
Sports Minister Gurmeet Singh Meet Hayer has expressed his discontent with this
decision, attributing it to political influences.
Hayer firmly
believes that the exclusion of Mohali from the list of host cities is a result
of political interference. He vows to take up the issue with the BCCI,
determined to shed light on the matter. In a video shared by ANI, he voiced his
concerns, stating, "The Punjab government will raise this issue with the
BCCI."
While Mohali
bears the brunt of this disappointment, another venue facing a similar fate is
Hyderabad. Though it will host three matches during the World Cup, none of the
host teams, including India, will compete there. Instead, Pakistan will take on
two qualifier teams, while New Zealand will face one of the qualifying teams on
October 6, 9, and 12.
As the countdown
to the World Cup continues, the absence of Mohali on the list of host cities
serves as a reminder of the complexity and politics that surround such
prestigious events. Cricket fans across the globe will anxiously await further
developments as the tournament draws near, hoping that the spirit of the game
prevails above all else.
