India and the EU will hold their first ministerial Strategic Foreign Policy Dialogue to strengthen ties ahead of the 2025 summit, focusing on security, trade, and green transitions while addressing global challenges like the Indo-Pacific and Russia-Ukraine conflict.
India and the European Union (EU) have agreed to hold their first ministerial-level Strategic Foreign Policy Dialogue, marking a milestone in strengthening their bilateral relationship. This decision was finalized during a phone conversation between India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar and Kaja Kallas, the EU’s newly appointed High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy.
The dialogue aims to bolster preparations for the 2025 India-EU Summit, focusing on global security, trade, and green transitions. It represents an expansion of ongoing cooperation, which has included cyber and maritime security, counter-terrorism, and the Indo-Pacific region's stability.
In posts on X (formerly Twitter), both Jaishankar and Kallas highlighted their discussions on shared global challenges. Kallas emphasized collaborative efforts on issues like the Russia-Ukraine conflict, trade, and security, reflecting the interconnected nature of global concerns.
This dialogue is seen as a step forward in solidifying key deliverables for the upcoming summit. It underscores India’s push for a free and open Indo-Pacific and Europe's strategic focus on derisking supply chains.
EU Ambassador Hervé Delphin reaffirmed the commitment to advancing mutual interests, noting the dialogue's potential to strengthen India-EU relations. This development follows Kallas's transition from Estonia's prime minister to the EU’s top foreign policy role, succeeding Josep Borrell.
