India is collaborating with the US to address rising illegal immigration following the deportation of over 1,100 Indian immigrants. The two nations aim to enhance legal immigration pathways and raise awareness about the risks associated with illegal migration and unscrupulous travel agents.
In light of a recent surge in deportations, the Indian government is working closely with the United States to tackle illegal immigration. Over 1,100 Indian immigrants were deported from the US between October 2023 and September 2024, marking a notable increase in such actions. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) attributed these deportations to ongoing “regular consular dialogue” between the two nations.
MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal emphasized that the cooperation aims to enhance legal immigration pathways while deterring illegal entries. “Our regular consular dialogue and arrangements facilitate the movement of individuals residing in the US illegally,” Jaiswal stated. This initiative is part of India’s broader strategy to create safer migration options, mitigating reliance on human smugglers and dubious travel agencies that exploit vulnerable individuals.
Royce Murray, Assistant Secretary for Border and Immigration Policy at the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), acknowledged the increased deportations and thanked India for its collaborative efforts. She highlighted the importance of building awareness regarding the risks associated with illegal immigration and the role of unscrupulous agents.
The joint initiative underscores the commitment of both nations to strengthen their relationship while addressing challenges related to migration and human trafficking. By fostering legal immigration channels and raising awareness about the consequences of unlawful pathways, India and the US hope to protect potential migrants from exploitation.
