Prepare for a celestial show this weekend as the Partial Lunar Eclipse, also known as Chandra Grahan 2023, illuminates the night skies. This spectacular event will begin on Saturday, October 28, and run through Sunday, October 29. The Earth passes between the Sun and the Moon during a lunar eclipse, producing a shadow on the lunar surface.

Consider the Earth to be a massive ball, the Sun to be a radiant light source, and the Moon to be a smaller orb. When the Earth's shadow falls on the Moon, it seems as if the Moon is disappearing or changing color.

There are two kinds of lunar eclipses:

Total Lunar Eclipse: In a total lunar eclipse, the Earth completely conceals the Moon, causing it to take on a reddish or coppery hue. This occurs because sunlight passing through the Earth's atmosphere is filtered, with red hues prevailing. This striking phenomenon is often referred to as a "blood moon."

Partial Lunar Eclipse: During a partial lunar eclipse, only a portion of the Moon is covered by the Earth's shadow, creating the appearance of a "bitten" Moon or a darkened section on one side.

The upcoming Partial Lunar Eclipse in 2023 is set to captivate observers in India and various parts of the Eastern Hemisphere, including Africa, Europe, Asia, and specific areas of Australia. The eclipse will commence at approximately 11:31 PM IST on Saturday, October 28, and continue until 2:24 AM IST on Sunday, October 29. Around 1:05 AM IST on Sunday, the Moon will be immersed in the Earth's darker shadow, known as the umbra.

Excitingly, NASA confirms that the lunar eclipse will be visible in all parts of India, offering a thrilling celestial experience. While people in the Americas might miss out on this spectacle, certain regions in Brazil will get a glimpse when the Moon rises. If you can't catch this lunar eclipse, mark your calendars for another opportunity on September 17, 2024, when the celestial show returns.
