In a recent series of tweets, Bollywood actress Kangana Ranaut reignited a passionate debate about the country's name, suggesting a shift from 'India' to 'Bharat.' This provocative proposal has ignited discussions across social media platforms and beyond.
In a tweet, Kangana shared a screenshot of her statement from 2021, where she initially proposed the idea. She emphasized the importance of embracing the name 'Bharat' as a more culturally and historically relevant alternative to 'India.
In another tweet, Kangana shared a post applauding her foresight, stating, "And some call it black magic … It’s simply Grey matter honey 😊 Congratulations to everyone!! Freed from a slave name … Jai Bharat."
Continuing her argument, she delved into the linguistic evolution of the name 'India,' asserting that it had its origins in colonial history. Kangana questioned why the nation had adopted a name laden with colonial connotations and proposed that 'Bharat' was a name that held more profound significance, rooted in the country's ancient history.
"What is there to love in this name?" she asked. "First of all, they couldn’t pronounce ‘Sindhu’ so they changed it to 'Indus.' Sometimes 'Hindos,' sometimes 'Indos'—a mix of everything led to 'India.' From the time of the Mahabharata, all the kingdoms participating in the Great War of Kurukshetra came together under the continent called Bharat. So, why were they calling us 'Indu Sindu'?"
Kangana emphasized that 'Bharat' encapsulated the unity and historical continuity of the nation, tracing back to ancient times. She criticized 'India' as a name imposed upon the country during the colonial era, reflecting a connotation of subjugation and servitude.
"Also, it’s not our name; we are 'Bhartiya,' not 'Indians,'" Kangana concluded, underlining her belief that the name 'Bharat' better aligned with the nation's cultural and historical roots.
Kangana's call for a name change has stirred a mix of support and opposition across social media, reigniting discussions about national identity and the significance of names. The debate over whether to transition from 'India' to 'Bharat' continues to unfold in the public sphere.
