Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara apologized after backlash over his remarks on a sexual assault in Bengaluru. His comment, seen as dismissive, sparked outrage. He clarified his intention and directed police to enhance night patrols. The incident, caught on CCTV, raised fresh concerns about women's safety in urban India.

Karnataka Home Minister G Parameshwara has publicly apologized following widespread outrage over comments he made about a recent sexual assault in Bengaluru’s BTM Layout. The minister was heavily criticized after referring to such incidents as something that "tend to happen" in large cities. The remarks came in response to a shocking CCTV video that captured a woman being assaulted in the early hours of April 3, sparking national attention and condemnation.
In a follow-up statement, Parameshwara clarified that his comments were misunderstood and emphasized his commitment to women’s safety. “I am someone who has always had a lot of concern for the safety of women. I don’t want my statement to be twisted. If any women have been hurt by this, I express my regret and apologise,” he said, while highlighting his role in utilizing Nirbhaya funds for protective measures.
The initial comment, seen by many as insensitive and dismissive, triggered a wave of criticism across social media and from political circles. Many accused the minister of downplaying the seriousness of gender-based violence.
In response to the backlash, Parameshwara has directed the Bengaluru police to increase night patrolling in vulnerable areas, aiming to prevent such incidents and reassure the public. The disturbing CCTV footage that sparked the debate shows an unidentified man approaching two women, groping one, and fleeing the scene.
