Kerala has allocated ₹750 crore for Wayanad landslide survivors' rehabilitation, building two townships with essential infrastructure. Over 250 people died in the July 2024 disaster. The State will use relief funds and private sponsorships after the Centre declined a special package, ensuring long-term recovery efforts.

The Kerala government has earmarked ₹750 crore for the rehabilitation of Wayanad landslide survivors, Finance Minister KN Balagopal announced on Friday during the presentation of the 2025-26 budget in the Assembly.
The funds will be utilised to develop two model townships in Wayanad to house those displaced by the catastrophic landslides in Chooralmala, Mundakkai, and Punchiri Mattam villages in Meppadi panchayat on July 30, 2024. The disaster, one of the deadliest in the state’s history, resulted in over 250 confirmed deaths, with hundreds still missing.
Balagopal criticised the Centre for not providing a special financial package for Wayanad’s rehabilitation despite Kerala submitting a detailed memorandum of ₹2,221 crore in November 2024. He stated that the State will mobilise resources from the Chief Minister’s Distress Relief Fund (CMDRF), the State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA), and private sponsorships to execute the project.
Earlier, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan had assured that the townships would include disaster-resilient housing, schools, hospitals, anganwadis, and recreational areas. The state cabinet has approved the master plan, with townships planned on 58.50 hectares in Kalpetta municipality and 48.96 hectares in Nedumpala estate, Meppadi. The land acquisition was permitted under the Disaster Management Act, 2005.
