In their case file, which was given to the CBI, the state police said that 20-year-old student JS Siddharth, who was found dead on February 18 at Kerala Veterinary University in Wayanad, had suffered from severe ragging and had been beaten nonstop for 29 hours.

After the death of the second-year student, the CBI took over the probe on Friday and re-registered the FIR against twenty people.
Information provided to the CBI suggests that Siddharth was tortured by his classmates and seniors between the hours of 9 a.m. on February 16 and 2 p.m. on the following day. The details of the primary investigation in the case file include that he suffered from severe sexual assault, physical and mental torture, and belt attacks.

He felt he had no choice except to drop out of the course and go back home or to continue studying at the school and finish it, which left him in a condition of tremendous emotional pain. The police report states that he killed himself on February 18 by hanging himself in the men's hostel restroom because he was under a great deal of mental stress and thought he had no other option.
Siddharth's body was found on the hostel grounds on February 18. The student's assailants, according to his family, were members of the Students' Federation of India (SFI), the student branch of the CPI (M) party that is currently in power.
Later, while on campus, more SFI activists were detained by the Kerala police.
Chief Minister PinarayiVijayan moved the matter to the CBI in response to a plea from Siddharth's family, who said they were dissatisfied with the current investigation and desired a CBI investigation.
