On Sunday, the Kuki People's Alliance announced the removal of its support for the government led by Manipur Chief Minister Biren Singh. Tongmang Haokip, the president of the Kuki People's Alliance, penned a letter to Manipur governor Anusuiya Uikey on Sunday, notifying her of the party's decision to withdraw its backing from the current administration.
"After careful consideration of the current conflagration, the continued support for the incumbent government of Manipur led by Chief Minister N Biren Singh is no longer fructuous. Accordingly, the support of the KPA to the Government of Manipur is hereby withdrawn and can be considered null and void," the letter to the state governor read.
The Kuki People's Alliance's withdrawal of support won't significantly alter the power dynamics within the state government, as they held a minor role as allies. The party had two Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs) providing support to the BJP government under Biren Singh's leadership.
Although the Kuki People's Alliance held relatively little influence, their withdrawal illustrates citizens' lack of confidence in the present government. Ongoing disruptions within Manipur suggest that the government is struggling to maintain control.
While the BJP commands 37 MLAs within the current government, it also enjoys the endorsement of five MLAs from the Naga People's Front (NPF), seven MLAs from the National People's Party (NPP), in addition to support from three independent legislators.
Currently, the opposition comprises a total of eight MLAs, including five from the Congress, one from the JD(U), and two from the KPA. Following the previous state assembly elections, five JD(U) MLAs aligned themselves with the BJP.
