On Sunday, the residents of a beach in the Isle of Lewis located in Scotland informed the authorities about more than 50 pilot whales lying stranded on the beach. many of them were alive.
The Rescue Mission Failed
Even though the authorities tried to rescue the stranded whales and put them back into the water the mission failed and all the way lost their lives. The number of the lost whales has been reported to be around 55. Some whales were even euthanized by the authorities for welfare purposes.
The Nature of Pilot Whales
The British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) investigated the matter. It found that one pilot whale had a birth failure. The BDMLR said, “Pilot whales are notorious for their strong social bonds, so often when one whale gets into difficulty and strands, the rest follow.” The BDMLR now believes that when the female pilot whale suffered the birth failure of the shore, the rest of the group came forth to accompany her.
