Legendary singer Usha Uthup is honored with the Padma Bhushan.

Legendary Indian singer Usha Uthup was awarded the prestigious Padma Bhushan by President Draupadi Murmu, honoring her over five decades of entertaining audiences. Uthup dedicated the honor to her fans, hoping it inspires the next generation.

NEW DELHI (April 23, 2024) - Vocal maestro Usha Uthup, has been conferred with Padma Bhushan, the third highest civilian award in India, by President Draupadi Murmu, at a ceremony held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan Presidential Palace, on Monday.

The 76-year-old music legend added she was thrilled to have the award bestowed upon her and realizing that it was a sign from the government of India and her country which has been entertaining audiences for over five decades.

"Sometimes you can describe this as the moment of total humility and gratitude when your government, your country and your people appreciate you for all your hard work you've done for so many years," Uthup told reporters after the ceremony. "As for the award, I do not know what to say, but I am still in shock. It seems to me that is all a dream."

Since the 1960s, Uthup has thrilled the music lovers with her powerful vocals and masterfully crafted multigenre hits that include "Ramba ho ho," "Hari Om Hari," "Koi yahan aha," "One Two Cha Cha Cha" and "Darling". She is revered as the true "people's singer" who is dedicated to depicting joy through her music.

"I'm honoring the award to the public who have supported me through thick and thin for 54 years,” she said. "I always thought that I am a people's singer and my songs are dedicated to brighten up people’s day and help them forget about their problems for a while."

The singer felt that her recognition at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, was a great honor, and her patriotism got a high boost. She is expecting that she will be able to motivate the upcoming artists to keep working and not give up their dreams with this Padma Bhushan.

"It also reinforces the message that the youth should just hold on there and work hard. The government and the people will recognize your commitment to work and reward it one day," Uthup said.

Usha Uthup, with her great career and her highest national honor, her status as a legend will forever be set in the records of Indian cultural history.
