The United Nations reported that at least 3,958 people have died. This information comes from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) in a revised report that references the World Health Organization (WHO).
The latest report says that more than 9,000 people are still unaccounted for. But the previous report from OCHA had stated that 11,300 people had lost their lives in Derna because of the severe floods. They based this information on data from the Libyan Red Crescent in their Saturday report.
In Derna, by the sea where the disaster happened, rescue teams were working hard to make things better. A helicopter was searching the water for bodies, and big machines were removing things that were blocking rescue efforts.
In Derna, where around 120,000 people live, whole parts of the city were washed away or covered in mud. This happened because two dams to the south of the city broke, and lots of floodwater came rushing down a riverbed that is usually dry.
