West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has
squarely blamed the "Marxists" for the tragic death of a student at
Kolkata's prestigious Jadavpur University, alleging that they fostered an
environment of terror through alleged ragging. The first-year student's brutal
ragging and "torture" by Left-wing students prompted a massive
outcry.
At a rally in Behala, Banerjee blamed the event on
the "Marxists" and accused them of spreading terror in schools. She
accused them of seeing her Trinamool Congress as their main enemy and
questioned their partnership with other political groups.
A former student and two others who were living on campus illegally have been detained. Due to the serious nature of the incident, the police have filed a murder and conspiracy case and are considering using the severe POCSO Act.

Banerjee condemned the Left's conduct, emphasising
that the victim was even made to take off an amulet. She mourned the student's
passing and stressed the importance of empathising with others beyond the
classroom.
Banerjee did not generalise her criticism of
students, but she did single out those associated with groups that receive
support from the Left for her criticism. She also raised concerns about the
lack of campus-wide surveillance cameras and suggested that some students were
being influenced without their will.
The prominent Leftist student organisation at the university, the Students Federation of India (SFI), has been accused of being against the installation of CCTV cameras. But it looks like they're starting to change their minds.

Members of the Students for a Free Institute (SFI) blocked traffic and defended their position during a protest, arguing that the primary purpose of surveillance cameras should be to deter crime and protect students' rights. There has been much discussion regarding safety on college campuses and campus politics since the tragedy.
The Chief Minister's claim that "Marxists"
have fostered an atmosphere of fear on campus is indicative of the contentious
political climate there. The tragedy has highlighted the need for far-reaching
changes to safeguard youngsters.
