Meerut authorities have mandated QR codes at all food joints along the Kanwar Yatra route, allowing pilgrims to access ownership and safety details digitally. The move aims to ensure hygiene, transparency, and prevent overcharging, with strict penalties for non-compliance under the Food Safety Act ahead of the July 11 pilgrimage.

In preparation for the annual Kanwar Yatra starting July 11, the Meerut district administration has issued a new directive requiring all eateries along the pilgrimage route to display key information, including a QR code linking to the owner's details and regulatory compliance status.
The Kanwar Yatra, a major Hindu pilgrimage during the Shravan month, sees millions of Lord Shiva devotees, known as kanwariyas, walk long distances to collect Ganga water. To ensure their safety and access to hygienic food, authorities are stepping up food regulation enforcement this year.
Divisional Commissioner Hrishikesh Bhaskar Yashod emphasized that every food joint must now clearly display a menu with prices, along with valid food safety registration certificates that include the owner's name and registration number. A unique QR code must also be placed at each establishment, enabling pilgrims to verify ownership and food safety compliance using their smartphones.
“This initiative ensures that Kanwariyas are not overcharged and receive safe, quality food during their journey,” said Dr. Yashod. He added that strict action would be taken against those who fail to comply, with penalties reaching up to ₹2 lakh under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006.
This measure follows a history of similar attempts, including a controversial order from 2024 that required food outlets to display owner names, which was later stayed by the Supreme Court due to legal concerns.

Neighbouring Uttarakhand has also stepped up health inspections along the Yatra path, with Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami instructing officials to ensure clean and safe food access for all pilgrims.
With increased regulatory oversight and digital tracking, the administration aims to foster transparency, improve food hygiene, and protect the welfare of the thousands of devotees expected to participate this year.
