A Mexican Navy training ship, ARM Cuauhtémoc, collided with the Brooklyn Bridge on May 17, injuring multiple people, including two critically. The tall vessel’s mast struck the bridge, sparking a mass casualty response and a major rescue effort. Authorities are investigating the cause and assessing structural damage.

In a dramatic maritime mishap, a Mexican Navy training ship, ARM Cuauhtémoc, collided with the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday night, May 17, triggering a major search and rescue operation. The tall sailing ship, carrying around 200 people, struck the iconic bridge just before 9 PM, with one of its 147-foot masts reportedly slamming into the structure.
Shocking footage of the collision quickly flooded social media, capturing the moment the towering mast hit the bridge as stunned bystanders looked on. Some videos showed the ship flying a massive Mexican flag and playing music moments before the crash. According to emergency services, numerous injuries have been reported, with at least two people in critical condition being rushed to hospitals. Others were transported to the Brooklyn Navy Yard for treatment and assessment.
The ARM Cuauhtémoc, a ship built in Spain in 1982, is used by the Mexican Navy for training missions and goodwill visits. The reason for its journey down the East River at the time of the incident remains unclear. Mexican authorities have declared the crash a “mass casualty event,” as rescue teams continue to search the surrounding waters for any individuals who may have fallen overboard during the impact.
The crash comes just over a year after a devastating bridge collapse in Baltimore caused by a cargo ship collision, reviving concerns over maritime safety near major infrastructure. The Brooklyn Bridge remains under inspection, with authorities assessing the extent of the damage and reviewing safety protocols for vessel traffic in the area.
