A restaurant in Gurugram's Badshahpur was set on fire on Tuesday a day after clashes broke out between two groups in Haryana's Nuh district during a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) procession.
A mob of approximately 50 to 60 people targeted the area, setting fire to the restaurant and vandalising neighbouring shops owned by a specific community. The mob also chanted slogans in front of a mosque, exacerbating the tension.
During the earlier clashes in Nuh, five people lost their lives, including two home guards and an imam. The violence quickly spread to Gurugram, prompting the closure of the Badshahpur market. Additionally, the mob toppled parked two-wheelers in the area.
The tragic loss of lives included the two home guards, Neeraj and Gurusevak, who were part of the Gurugram Police Team. Shakti, a shop owner from Nuh, and Abhishek, a participant in the VHP procession from Panipat, also fell victim to the turmoil.
In Gurugram, the imam of Sector 57's mosque, Mohmmad Saad, was fatally attacked, and another man, Khursheed, was left in critical condition after being shot in the leg.
In response to the escalating situation, Gurugram and Faridabad authorities closed all schools and colleges, implementing prohibitory orders under Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CrPC) in Gurugram and Nuh.
This unfortunate incident underscores the importance of fostering dialogue and peaceful coexistence among communities to avoid such violent confrontations in the future. Authorities are diligently investigating the causes behind the clashes and arson as they work towards restoring harmony and stability in the region.
