Prime Minister Modi and President Trump discussed trade, defence, and counterterrorism at the White House, agreeing on a $500 billion trade goal and India’s F-35 fighter jet purchase. Trump approved Tahawwur Rana’s extradition, while tariff disputes remained unresolved. The meeting reinforced U.S.-India ties amid ongoing trade negotiations.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi and U.S. President Donald Trump held high-level discussions at the White House on Thursday, addressing key issues such as trade expansion, defence cooperation, and counterterrorism. The leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral ties, despite ongoing tariff tensions.
During the meeting, Modi announced India’s goal to double trade with the U.S. by 2030, aligning with a potential $500 billion trade deal. Trump, however, reiterated concerns over India’s high tariffs, particularly on American cars, and introduced a reciprocal tariff policy to address trade imbalances.
Defence cooperation was a major focus, with Trump confirming the sale of advanced F-35 fighter jets to India. Additionally, discussions extended to energy partnerships, with the U.S. positioning itself as a primary supplier of oil and gas to India, aiming to reduce the trade deficit.
In a significant move, Trump announced the approval of Tahawwur Rana’s extradition to India. Rana, a key figure in the 2008 Mumbai attacks, will face trial in India, marking a step forward in counterterrorism efforts. Modi expressed gratitude, emphasizing the need for strong joint action against terrorism.
