Monkeypox: A Former Global Health Emergency Today
The Emergency Committee of the World Health Organization had sent a recommendation to the WHO Director General, Tedros Adhanom to remove monkey props from the list of diseases categorized as Global Health Emergencies. Tedros informed, "I have accepted that advice, and am pleased to declare that mpox is no longer a global health emergency.”
What is Monkeypox?
The disease Monkeypox is characterized by red rashes with inflammation in the skin due to enlargement of lymphatic nodes and vessels. This is accompanied by frequent fever and weakness. Approximately, 87,000 cases had been registered in a single year related to monkeypox in 2020. The figures have considerably decreased in the subsequent period as a result of which, the disease is no longer a Global Health Emergency as per the World Health Organization.
