Nagpur witnessed violent clashes over Aurangzeb’s tomb, with an FIR revealing that a female police officer was molested during the riots. The violence, fueled by rumors of Quran burning, led to curfews and arrests. Authorities continue investigations while urging the public to remain calm and avoid misinformation.

Violence erupted in Nagpur following a controversy surrounding the tomb of Mughal emperor Aurangzeb, leading to widespread unrest and destruction. Amid the chaos, a female police officer was allegedly molested by a man who also made obscene gestures toward other women, including law enforcement personnel.
The incident occurred on March 17, when riots broke out around 4 PM and lasted until nearly midnight. The unrest was fueled by rumors of a Quran burning by a right-wing group, which rapidly escalated tensions. Protesters took to the streets in Mahal and Hasanpuri, torching vehicles and vandalizing property. Authorities imposed a curfew in several areas to curb further violence.
An FIR was lodged on March 18, detailing the misconduct against the police officer. The accused reportedly touched her inappropriately, including her uniform, while law enforcement was attempting to control the rioters. The case, registered at Ganeshpeth Police Station, lists 51 named suspects and hundreds of unidentified individuals. So far, 51 people have been arrested in connection with the violence.
Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde addressed the controversy, invoking the example of how the United States handled the burial of Osama Bin Laden, stating that Aurangzeb should not be glorified. His remarks further intensified the debate surrounding the Mughal ruler’s legacy.
