The terror attack that left 26 civilians dead in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, has prompted a wave of high-level political and diplomatic responses. The assault, carried out in the Baisaran meadow, shook the nation and forced Prime Minister Narendra Modi to cut short his official trip to Saudi Arabia, returning early Wednesday morning to lead an emergency response meeting at the airport. He was briefed by National Security Advisor Ajit Doval and senior government officials.
Home Minister Amit Shah rushed to Kashmir soon after the attack to assess the situation firsthand. He was briefed by Jammu and Kashmir Police and other senior intelligence officials. Meanwhile, the Leader of the Opposition, Rahul Gandhi, reached out to Shah and Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah, expressing condolences and urging justice for the victims. Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge echoed the sentiment, calling the incident a “despicable carnage.”
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also cut short her overseas visit to the US and Peru to return to India in light of the situation. The coordinated response signals a united political front in the face of terror.
