The death toll of Odia workers in the Telangana pharmaceutical factory blast has risen to nine, with one more victim confirmed through DNA testing, officials said on Saturday. The explosion occurred on June 30 at a plant in Pashamylaram, Sangareddy district, and involved a group of 14 workers from Odisha.
The latest casualty was identified as Purna Chandra Sahu, a resident of Sukarpada in Cuttack district. His identity was established using DNA-based analysis, according to Pritish Panda, Officer on Special Duty at the Odisha Parivaar Directorate. The bodies of all nine deceased have now been handed over to their families.
Of the nine Odia victims, three were from Ganjam district, two from Cuttack, two from Nabarangpur, and one each from Balasore and Jajpur. Four other workers from Odisha were injured in the blast. Two of them have been discharged from hospital care, while the remaining two, including Samir Padhi from Ganjam, continue to receive treatment. Padhi, who suffered 35% burns, has reportedly shown improvement and has been moved out of the ICU.
The explosion was one of the deadliest industrial accidents in recent months, prompting widespread concern over worker safety and regulatory compliance in hazardous sectors. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi has announced ₹10 lakh ex gratia for the families of each deceased Odia worker. The compensation will be disbursed from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF).
