The devastating LA wildfires have put the 2025 Oscars at risk of cancellation for the first time in 96 years. The Academy is considering a shift toward supporting the community and fundraising, and if the ceremony goes ahead, luxurious goody bags will be scrapped. The Academy has also extended the voting period and will announce nominees virtually.

The ongoing wildfires in Los Angeles have caused widespread devastation, and according to reports, the 2025 Oscars ceremony is now at risk of being canceled for the first time in 96 years. The fires have led to significant loss of life and destruction, including the homes of high-profile figures like Mandy Moore and Paris Hilton.
An insider revealed that the Oscars board is concerned about the optics of celebrating while many Angelenos are dealing with grief and loss. Even if the fires subside soon, the city's recovery is expected to take months, and the board is prioritizing support and fundraising over the ceremony. The Academy has put a “contingency strategy” in place, similar to the one used after the 9/11 attacks, should the event need to be called off.
The Oscars 2025 ceremony, which typically features a luxurious goody bag worth £140,000 (approximately $171,000), is also expected to forgo such gifts this year, with board members deeming them "in bad taste" given the current situation.
