The Royal Society, a renowned scientific institution, is embroiled in controversy following the resignation of Oxford professor Dorothy Bishop. Bishop, an expert in developmental neuropsychology, stepped down in protest over Elon Musk’s continued fellowship, labeling him a "Bond villain" for his conduct.

Bishop criticized Musk’s use of wealth and influence to spread political propaganda and intimidate critics, actions she believes contradict the Society’s core principles. In an interview with The Guardian, Bishop revealed she had expressed her concerns to the Society’s leadership, who emphasized procedural fairness regarding Musk's membership. However, the scientist found Musk’s behavior incompatible with the institution’s values.

Her resignation follows a series of controversies surrounding Musk, including accusations of promoting misinformation and politically charged rhetoric on social media. Musk, who was inducted as a fellow in 2018 for his contributions to technology and innovation, has faced increasing scrutiny from Royal Society members.

Reports suggest the Society has been under pressure to address Musk’s contentious actions, such as his controversial comments on climate change and public health. However, it has defended its processes, stating that concerns about Fellows’ behavior are handled through a clear code of conduct.

Bishop, in a blog post, admitted she did not expect her resignation to trigger any immediate changes but felt compelled to take a stand. She emphasized the need for the Royal Society to uphold its values by holding even high-profile members accountable.

A spokesperson for the Society expressed regret over Bishop’s departure, praising her contributions but reaffirmed its commitment to procedural integrity. The controversy has sparked debate on the balance between honoring scientific achievement and maintaining ethical standards.
