In a move towards
achieving greater jointness within its military, China has transferred naval
aviation assets to the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Air Force. The
restructuring aims to improve coordination between armed services and enhance
combat effectiveness. The development comes amid escalating tensions, notably
in the South China Sea and Taiwan Strait.
Previously, the
People's Liberation Army Navy (PLAN) operated aviation units with capabilities
for maritime strikes. These units have now been integrated into the PLA Air
Force, aligning them with the air-based maritime strike capabilities. The move
seeks to streamline command structures and eliminate duplication, enhancing
administrative management across the armed services.
This shift will
also bolster the PLAN's carrier-based aviation force, which is undergoing
expansion. While some aviation units, including helicopter and UAV assets,
remain under PLAN control, key capabilities such as maritime strike missions
now fall within the remit of the PLA Air Force.
The restructuring
is part of China's broader efforts to assert its regional dominance,
particularly evident in recent events such as the maritime blockade of a
Philippine outpost in the South China Sea. These moves have garnered
international criticism and raised concerns about China's coercive tactics.
Experts view this
restructuring as a decisive step in China's journey toward military
modernization. By unifying various capabilities under the PLA Air Force, the
nation aims to enhance its combat readiness and project power more effectively
in regional conflicts.
