PM Modi begins historic visits to Poland and Ukraine, marking the first Indian premier's trip to Poland in 45 years and the first-ever to independent Ukraine. He aims to strengthen ties with Poland and discuss peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict with President Zelenskyy, following his recent Moscow visit.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has departed for a significant diplomatic mission to Poland and Ukraine, marking several firsts in India's foreign relations. This trip represents the first visit by an Indian premier to Poland in 45 years and the first-ever visit by an Indian Prime Minister to Ukraine since its independence in 1991.
Modi's journey begins in Poland, where he will meet Prime Minister Donald Tusk and President Andrzej Duda to strengthen bilateral ties as the two nations celebrate 70 years of diplomatic relations. The Prime Minister emphasized Poland's importance as a key economic partner in Central Europe and noted the shared commitment to democracy and pluralism.
Following his Polish engagements, Modi will make a historic journey to Kyiv, traveling by road and rail to reach the Ukrainian capital on August 23. This visit is particularly noteworthy as it may be the first time an Indian prime minister enters an active war zone.
In his departure statement, Modi expressed his intention to discuss the peaceful resolution of the ongoing Ukraine conflict with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy. He stated, "As a friend and partner, we hope for an early return of peace and stability in the region."

The visit to Ukraine comes just over a month after Modi's trip to Moscow for the annual India-Russia Summit, where he told President Vladimir Putin that a solution cannot be found on the battlefield. This balanced approach reflects India's complex position in the conflict, having abstained from most Ukraine-related UN resolutions while calling for an end to hostilities and a return to diplomacy.
Modi's trip is being closely watched for potential steps India might take to facilitate peace in the region, given its unique relationships with both Russia and Ukraine.
