PM Modi Honored with Mauritius’ Highest Civilian Award

PM Narendra Modi received Mauritius’ highest civilian honor, becoming the first Indian to do so. His visit strengthened bilateral ties, leading to eight MoUs and India’s commitment to constructing Mauritius’ new Parliament building. India and Mauritius also elevated their relationship to a strategic partnership, reinforcing their deep historical and cultural bonds.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was conferred with Mauritius’ highest civilian award, “The Grand Commander of the Order of the Star and Key of the Indian Ocean,” by President Dharam Gokhool in a special ceremony on Wednesday. This makes Modi the first Indian leader to receive the prestigious recognition.
Accepting the honor, Modi expressed gratitude, stating that the award was a tribute to the 1.4 billion Indians and a testament to the historical and cultural ties between India and Mauritius. He emphasized the shared commitment between the two nations towards regional peace, progress, and sustainable development.
PM Modi’s visit to Mauritius, which is at the invitation of Prime Minister Navinchandra Ramgoolam, aims to strengthen bilateral ties and cooperation. During his visit, eight Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) were signed between the two nations. Additionally, Modi announced India’s support for the construction of a new Parliament building in Mauritius, further showcasing India’s commitment to its neighbor.
India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri highlighted that the relationship between the two countries had been elevated to the level of a strategic partnership, marking a significant milestone. He noted that Mauritius is the first country in India’s neighborhood with which such an agreement has been concluded.

Modi, in his departure statement, reaffirmed India’s close ties with Mauritius, calling it a key maritime partner in the Indian Ocean and a gateway to Africa. He underscored the strong historical, cultural, and democratic bonds between the two nations, which have fostered mutual trust and cooperation.
