Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed deep grief over the loss of lives in the catastrophic floods that struck central Texas, claiming more than 50 lives, including several children. Taking to social media platform X on Saturday, PM Modi conveyed his condolences to the U.S. government and the bereaved families, stating he was “deeply saddened” by the scale of the disaster.

The floods, triggered by torrential rainfall, caused flash flooding across central Texas, with Kerr County among the worst affected. In one of the most alarming developments, over 20 girls went missing from Camp Mystic — a private Christian summer camp — after the nearby river swelled more than 20 feet in under two hours.

Rescue operations have been in full force since Friday, with hundreds evacuated or airlifted by helicopters. U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed that the Coast Guard had “saved or assisted” at least 223 individuals. She emphasized that the federal government remains fully committed to locating missing persons and reuniting families as quickly as possible.

“No effort is being spared,” Noem said in a statement, adding that President Biden has pledged full federal support and remains in close contact with disaster response teams.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott also expanded the state’s disaster declaration on Saturday to include additional counties, such as Travis County, as floodwaters continued to threaten broader regions.
