A 15-year-old boy died from electrocution in Kerala after touching an illegal electric fence set to trap wild boars. The incident sparked political controversy ahead of Nilambur’s bypoll, with Congress blaming government negligence and LDF leaders alleging conspiracy. The death of a 15-year-old boy from electrocution in Kerala’s Nilambur has triggered a major political row just days ahead of a key bypoll. The teenager, Ananthu Suresh, was killed Saturday evening after he accidentally touched an illegal live wire trap intended to kill wild boars. The incident occurred while he was fishing near a stream in Vazhikkadavu panchayat. Two of his relatives were also injured.

The illegal electric fence, reportedly connected to a government power line, was traced back to a local man named Vineesh, who has since been arrested under culpable homicide charges. Police say further investigation is underway, including examination of his phone records to identify possible accomplices.

An autopsy confirmed electric shock injuries. The Kerala State Electricity Board clarified that the wire was illegally drawn from its single-phase line without permission. It reiterated that such installations must be cleared by the electrical inspectorate and condemned unauthorised connections by individuals.

The tragedy quickly turned political. The Congress and its allies launched protests in Nilambur, accusing the ruling LDF of negligence and complicity. Congress bypoll candidate Aryadan Shoukath credited public agitation for the swift arrest, while questioning the state’s awareness of such traps.

Forest Minister AK Saseendran escalated tensions by alleging that the fence could be part of a political conspiracy to influence the bypoll scheduled for June 19. He claimed the timing and placement of the trap were suspicious, suggesting it may have been set up to create public outrage against the government.

Congress leaders strongly condemned the minister’s remarks, calling them “despicable” and demanding accountability. CPI(M) leaders defended Saseendran, stating the truth would emerge through a detailed probe.

As Nilambur heads into elections, the tragic death of a student has turned into a flashpoint for heated political exchange.
