Tamil Nadu minister Udhayanidhi Stalin's remarks regarding Sanatan Dharma have stirred up a political storm, leading to a heated debate on religious and cultural sensitivities. While Udhayanidhi's statements have ignited controversy, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's response has put the spotlight on the Congress party's stance in the matter.
Udhayanidhi Stalin, a member of the DMK, compared Sanatan Dharma to diseases like dengue and malaria, stating that it should be eradicated rather than merely opposed. He drew parallels between Sanatan Dharma practices and social issues like Sati and child marriages. Despite facing backlash, Udhayanidhi stood firm in his stance, citing the research of Periyar and Ambedkar to support his views.
Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Assam Chief Minister and a prominent BJP leader, refrained from condemning Udhayanidhi's statements directly. Instead, he questioned the Congress party's alliance with the DMK, suggesting that it was a test of their commitment to Sanatan Dharma. Sarma argued that failure to take action against Udhayanidhi's statements would lead people to believe that the Congress is anti-Hindu.
The BJP seized upon these remarks to accuse the entire INDI alliance, including Uddhav Thackeray and Rahul Gandhi, of having an agenda against Sanatan Dharma. This development has left the Congress party facing a dilemma as it navigates its alliance with the DMK and addresses concerns over its stance on Sanatan Dharma.
