Amritsar, Punjab, April 21, 2024**: A 23-year-old pregnant woman was tied to a bed and set on fire on Friday allegedly by her husband in the village of Buled Nangal of Amritsar district following an argument. The woman, known as Pinky and six months pregnant, was hit and died on the spot.

Police officials said that Pinky and her husband Sukhdev got involved in constant unpleasant discussions. The eventful day was when his physical scuffle with his wife ended up with him tying her to the bed and burning her alive before running away.

"Sukhdev and Pinky have a turbulent relationship where they quarrel over various subjects. On Friday, the couple had another fight after which Sukhdev killed Pinky and left," officials reported.

The incident has presented a great deal of public grief, anger, and criticism from the authorities and the rights bodies. The National Commission for Women (NCW) conveyed its horror and shock over the crime on social media and demanded the Director General of Police, Gaurav Yadav, arrest the criminal within three days and submit a report.

"Really shocked by the very sad event of Amritsar where a man is alleged to have burnt his pregnant wife. The brutality of this act is obvious," NCW chairperson Rekha Sharma wrote.

Police authorities have been on a roll to hunt down the accused husband, Sukhdev, who is still missing. The case at hand is yet another testimony to the urgent need for a better domestic violence protection system and general women’s security in all the states and the country.
