During Vladimir Putin’s U.S. visit, unverified reports resurfaced alleging his security detail collects his waste during trips abroad to conceal health data. First published in 2022, the claims suggest Putin uses sealed pouches and portable toilets, reflecting Russia’s intense secrecy around the president’s medical condition and personal security.

Russian President Vladimir Putin’s trip to Alaska for a summit with U.S. President Donald Trump has reignited bizarre but persistent claims about the Russian leader’s security practices. Reports dating back to 2022 allege that Putin’s bodyguards collect his fecal matter and urine during foreign visits to prevent intelligence agencies from analyzing his health.
The claims were first detailed by French investigative journalists Regis Gente and Mikhail Rubin in Paris Match. They suggested Putin’s waste is placed in sealed pouches and discreetly transported back to Moscow under the watch of the Federal Protective Service (FSO), the elite agency responsible for safeguarding Russia’s top officials.
According to the report, the protocol was in place as early as 2017 when Putin visited France and was later observed during his trip to Saudi Arabia in 2019. Further accounts, including reporting by ex-BBC journalist Farida Rustamova, described how Putin often travels with a private portable toilet to ensure no biological traces are left behind.
The unusual practice is allegedly designed to shield sensitive medical information, as excrement can reveal potential illnesses or treatments. Speculation about Putin’s health has persisted for years, with rumors suggesting possible cancers or neurological disorders, though none have been confirmed by the Kremlin.
As Putin, now 72, appeared alongside Trump in Alaska, the resurfacing of these strange reports once again drew global attention. While the Kremlin has never addressed the allegations directly, their longevity highlights the secrecy surrounding the Russian president’s personal life and health.

For observers, the so-called “poop protocol” may be less about eccentricity and more about state security — ensuring that no clue about Russia’s most powerful leader slips into foreign hands.
