Mumbai Indians (MI) have retained their key players—Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, and Suryakumar Yadav—ahead of the IPL 2025 auction, despite a challenging 2024 season. This decision keeps MI's core intact after an in-depth retention strategy spearheaded by selfless efforts from Sharma.

The retention of the "Big Four" was a collaborative process, balancing player hierarchy and long-term goals. Bumrah became MI’s top-paid player at ₹18 crore, followed by Pandya and Yadav at ₹16.35 crore each, with Sharma close behind at ₹16.30 crore. Emerging player Tilak Varma also received a notable retention at ₹8 crore.

Throughout the process, there were discussions about potential changes in leadership. Some reports suggested Hardik Pandya might step into a more prominent leadership role. However, Sharma’s willingness to support his teammates and simplify the team structure was pivotal. His decision to prioritize other players, placing Bumrah, Pandya, and Yadav in leading roles due to their standing in the national team, allowed MI to retain the group.
