Aryna Sabalenka won her first US Open title, defeating Jessica Pegula 7-5, 7-5 in a thrilling final. This victory marks Sabalenka's third Grand Slam and makes her the first woman since 2016 to win both hardcourt majors in one season. The match showcased Sabalenka's power and resilience against Pegula's determined resistance.
In a display of power and resilience, world number two Aryna Sabalenka clinched her first US Open title, defeating American hopeful Jessica Pegula in a captivating final at Arthur Ashe Stadium. The Belarusian star's 7-5, 7-5 victory not only added to her growing collection of Grand Slam trophies but also etched her name in tennis history as the first woman since Angelique Kerber in 2016 to capture both hardcourt majors in the same season.
Sabalenka's journey to the title was far from straightforward. The match, played under the closed roof of Arthur Ashe Stadium, saw momentum swings that kept the capacity crowd of 23,000 on the edge of their seats. Sabalenka's aggressive play, punctuated by 40 winners, was met with Pegula's determined resistance, creating a compelling contrast of styles.
The first set was a testament to Sabalenka's power game, with 25 winners counterbalanced by 23 unforced errors. Despite Pegula's late surge from 2-5 down to 5-5, Sabalenka's relentless pressure secured the opener 7-5 in a marathon 60-minute battle.
The second set mirrored the first, with Sabalenka racing to a 3-0 lead before Pegula mounted an impressive comeback to lead 5-3. However, Sabalenka's mental fortitude shone through as she regained control, breaking Pegula in the 10th game and ultimately sealing the championship when her opponent's final shot sailed long.
For Sabalenka, this victory was particularly sweet, erasing the disappointment of her runner-up finish at last year's US Open. "I remember all those tough losses in the past here and it's going to sound easy but never give up on your dream and just keep trying, keep working hard," an emotional Sabalenka shared post-match. She added, "I'm speechless right now. So many times I thought I was so close to get the US Open title. It has always been a dream of mine and finally I got this beautiful trophy."
Pegula, despite the loss, showcased her fighting spirit and recent excellent form, having won 15 out of 16 matches on the North American summer hard court swing. "I wish she would have at least let me get one set," Pegula said graciously in defeat, acknowledging Sabalenka's formidable power. "She's super powerful and isn't going to give you anything. She can take the racquet out of your hand."

The match, watched by sporting luminaries including Olympic champion Noah Lyles, NBA star Steph Curry, and F1 legend Lewis Hamilton, was a fitting finale to the women's singles tournament. It highlighted not only the physical prowess but also the mental strength required to triumph at the highest level of tennis.
As Sabalenka basks in the glow of her third Grand Slam title, her victory at Flushing Meadows cements her status as one of the dominant forces in women's tennis. With both the Australian Open and US Open titles to her name in 2024, the tennis world eagerly anticipates what heights she might reach next.
